Do You Need A Specialist For Truck Repairs?

Posted on

In almost all facets of life, DIY has become a popular option to professional service. The assumption is that it will save you money. A word of caution though; when it comes to truck repair, there is a lot you can do yourself but some repairs are better left to the specialists.

What You Can Do Yourself

Replacing Lights

You can follow your owner's manual. Most of the time, all you need is the right screwdriver and the right light bulb. Simply unscrew the light, remove the bulb from inside and replace it.

Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing worn wiper blades is not rocket science. By all means, do it yourself.

Oil and Air Filters

Clogged oil filters will interfere with the flow of fuel into your truck resulting in poor performance. You can easily change the filter yourself. This should be done every 30,000 miles, preferably at the time of oil change.

You should also change your air filter regularly.

Fluid Top-Up/Change

Check your fluid levels and top up appropriately. These include your engine oil, steering oil, windshield water fluid and coolant.

With a bit of expertise, and if you are handy, you can do an oil or lubricant change on your truck. If you are unsure how to change your engine oil or how to dispose of the used oil, better have it done at a truck repair shop.

What to Leave to Experts

Check Engine Light

When this light stays on, it means there is a problem with your engine. This may be accompanied by driving issues such as stalling and error codes. You will require a diagnosis to find out the problem. Since you have no equipment to do this, leave it to the experts.

Overheating

Prolonged overheating can damage your engine. If this happens while you are on the road, park your truck off the road, turn off your engine and have your truck towed to a repair shop

Timing Belt

This is one of the most expensive parts of your truck. If you try fixing it yourself, you run the risk of damaging your engine.

Transmission

Maintenance and repair of your truck's transmission should be left to experts. The transmission has narrow passageways for fluids which can be destroyed by as little as a grain of sand.

DIY will certainly save you loads of money but limit it to light maintenance jobs. For sensitive jobs, you are better off consulting a truck services specialist. Contact an auto shop like Apex Transportation for more information and assistance.
